Test driving AC Propulsion's eBox

AC Propulsion all electric eBox
AC Propulsion all electric eBox, is a reference.

A year after my initial test drive of the eBox from AC Propulsion, the magic has not faded, in fact, the eBox is still our point of reference and still offers that EV grin.

The gist is eBox encounter is still the point of reference.  The EV community owes much to AC Propulsion.  What started with the astonishing tZero discreetly started an electric vehicle revolution.  The eBox extends on the concept with amenities and plenty of performance.

AC Propulsion Behind The Scenes.  It has been a good year for the company, founded in 1992.  It has gained international presence and its expertise has been sought out from shows such as AltCar Expo to BMW’s trial Mini e run, and more.

The Test Drive.  Josh Allan was kind enough to let me take the eBox on the highway.

The striking thing about the eBox is that it is superbly engineered.  You can sense, feel and see the car is the work of engineers, unencumbered by out of touch management and overzealous marketing departments.  Features, such as setting the regenerative breaking is a dream for those who want to squeeze battery charge performance.  Set it to the maximum and the car slows down as you let off the foot, sending a recharge to its battery pack.  Set it to the lowest and it can cruise as if idling, with little regenerative capacity.

Once reaching about 60mph, the eBox has more to offer.  It is relentless in its acceleration and shows the  best capacity of electric motor shows, it just keeps on accelerating.

Cruising along with full regenerative breaking, it was easy maintaining the car at an even pace.  In many ways, those accustomed to a manual transmissions will understand it.  With a feather foot, you can squeeze much out of it, much to the delight of hypermilers.

Other points of interest are the on-board diagnosed features.  The simple dash holds basic information, such as Trip A and B, as well as temperature of every single cells with a flick of a dial.  You can monitor amperage both at the cell level and at the electric motor, as well as its temperature, voltage and more.  It is a delight for technically inclined drivers but non-obstructive enough anyone else.

All in all, the eBox is what an EV should be and will be like in the future.  A real car, with real performance and easy to drive, whether you are in traffic or open roads.  The eBox still remains my point of reference when it comes to EVs.  After all, Tom Hanks raves about it.

Nick's first car recollection at 6 years old was the back of a Bugatti 37A. After having driven an AC Propulsion eBox, it was clear where the future of the automobile was, the electric drive.
