Make no mistake, Tessanne Chin is not on The Voice just to represent Jamaica, she is a mission to become the newest universal sensation to come out of the island after her most stunning performance yet on the NBC talent show Monday night.
Tessanne, already a fan favorite on The Voice after progressing through a blind audition, a battle round and a knockout, left no doubt regarding her legitimacy as a top contender to win the talent show with a flawless set during the show’s live performance round. Following nine performers and a bevy of anticipation, the Hideaway singer showcased herself as not only as arguably the best performer of the night, but tapped into her undoubted superstar potential that looks certain to be fulfilled, regardless of the show’s outcome.
Adding a bit of ‘yard’ flavor to the proceedings, Tessanne paid homage to one of her biggest mentors, legendary Reggae singer, Jimmy Cliff by performing his greatest hit, Many Rivers To Cross. Having performed covers of pop hits by Kelly Clarkson, Emeli Sande and Pink in previous rounds, her switch to a more familiar sound only ingratiated her with audience members and judges that much more, belting out every high note effortlessly and leaving every bit of emotion on the stage.
Though several of her supporters and herself were moved to tears following this set, the judges were not surprised by her effort, particularly judge, Christina Aguilera.
"As amazing and incredible as that was, I was not surprised. I knew you were capable of those soaring vocals, I am a fan,"
Her coach, Adam Levine spoke just as much to her character as her talent, suggesting she has a ‘golden soul’ and is a ‘wonderful human being,’ while fellow judge, Cee-Lo Green even broke into Jamaican patois while expressing his satisfaction with the performance.
Now it is up to the viewing public to decide whether that performance is worthy of advancing as fans will have until 11 a.m. (Eastern Time) Tuesday morning to vote for Tessanne. Persons are allowed to vote on The Voice’s official website (www.thevoice.com) or to call 1-877-553-3710. Each person is allowed a maximum of 10 votes.
You can also go to iTunes and purchase a copy of Tessanne’s Many Rivers To Cross cover, which also counts as a vote.
The Voice returns Tuesday night with 10 more contestants before an elimination show on Thursday night reveals which 12 of the 20 competitors will move on further in the live rounds.
