Season 5 of NBC's popular singing competition show 'The Voice' may have finally found the superstar the network has failed to produce since it's inception. Unlike it's rival American Idol, Voice has not churned out a mega star post competition since it started in 2011 and this season was do or die. Tessanne Chin, a forceful sultry powerhouse brought not only killer vocals to the contest, but also a whole new demographic to NBC's Monday and Tuesday night line up. Chin who is of Chinese and Cherokee decent calls the island of Jamaica home and the support she received from fellow Caribbean and Chinese American Nationals in the United States not only cemented her place in the competition, it also secured killer ratings for the NBC network. Industry critics are raving that Season 5 of 'The Voice' may be the network's best yet with a steady 11.5 million to 12 million viewers on average per night of the broadcast, taking top spot in the coveted 18-49 year old demographic during it's entire 13 weeks run. December 10th, the night of the semi-finals marked the first time since 2002 that the network won a Monday finishing at number 1 or tied for number 1 among the Big 4 networks with no Olympic help. Coincidentally, 'The Voice' also recorded it's best performance in the history of the show with Tessanne's rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's emotional ballad, 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'. Less than 8 hours after the show, Chin propelled to number 1 on iTunes charts beating out Voice judge Christina Aguilera and A Great Big World, Pitbull and Kesha and boy band sensation One Direction. Tessanne proved her selling power once again on December 16th, when her final song in the competition, 'I Have Nothing' by Whitney Houston shot to number 1 on iTunes less than 6 hours after the last live voting show of the season. At the close of voting on Tuesday, Tessanne had six songs in total on the iTunes top 100 chart. No other artiste to date has had this kind of success in iTunes charts history.
Week after week, Tessanne Chin proved that she had what it took to be the next big pop star with consistent vocals and unmatched humility that won over the hearts of millions of Americans and equally her coach Adam Levine who at times was left emotional after her performances. On Monday night's show, Levine chided that Chin has it all in the bag and that in his opinion, she has already won, unintentionally shattering any hopes of a win for Will Champlin, his other contestant in the finals . At times stumbling for words, Adam said ”I’m not vying for the affection of everybody by saying ‘Vote for Tessanne, vote for Tessanne, ’ I’m just so blown away by what you do,” he said while tearing up. “I know — I know — in my mind and in my heart that you’re the winner of this show.” He added that "there is no ceiling when it comes to you" while describing his experience coaching Chin. 'The Voice', with an Emmy win under its belt for Outstanding Reality Show has a rigorous selection process so anyone who made it to the top three deserved to be there. Based on information from the show's producers and what is seen on the broadcasts, during the blind auditions, the decisions from the musician coaches are based solely on voice and not on looks. The coaches hear the artists perform, but they don't get to see them - thanks to rotating chairs. If a coach is impressed by the artist's voice, they push a button to select the artist for their team. If more than one coach pushes their button, the power then shifts to the artists to choose which coach they want to work with. If no coach pushes a button, the artist is eliminated from the competition.
Once the teams are set, the battle is on. Coaches will dedicate themselves to developing their team of artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success, along with help from their celebrity advisers. During the battle rounds, the coaches will pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song together in front of a studio audience.
After the vocal battle, the coach must choose which of their singers will advance to the next round of competition, while the losing artist is available to be stolen by another coach. Each coach has two steals available during the battle rounds.
At the end of the battles, only the strongest members of each coach's roster remain and proceed to the knockout rounds. The artists will be paired again with a member of their own teams, but this time they find out only minutes before performing with whom they are competing. The artists each select their own songs to perform individually, while their direct competitor watches and waits. They are vying for their coach's confidence and decision to take them to the live shows. Their coach will choose the winner, and the artist not selected will be sent home.
In the final live performance phase of the competition, the top artists from each team will compete each week against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience will vote to save their favorite artists, and the two artists with the lowest number of votes will be sent home each week.
The finale of 'The Voice' was the biggest production the show has ever seen and the stars came out to play. Celine Dion who sang a powerful duet with Tessane shared the stage with Neyo, One Republic, Lady Gaga, Aloe Blacc and Paramore. The Voice Top 20 also helped to close out the season with an opening number. Chin who has been heralded as one the best vocalist to enter the competition was overcome with emotions after her win was announced on Tuesday night. Somewhat of a musical royalty on her island, she is no stranger to the big stage. Tessanne gives training credit to International Reggae Icon and 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee Sir Jimmy Cliff. Chin mentioned in an NBC interview that she toured with Jimmy Cliff as backup singer several years ago. This experience may have added to her winning edge as her commanding vocals were always contained and controlled showcasing her professionalism and experience as a singer. Her stage presence is undeniable and her naturally sweet demeanor made it even more inviting for people to fall in love with the Tessanne Brand. The rise to the win though unequivocally well deserved wasn't always a walk-in-the-park for the 28 year old and wasn't free of controversy either. Christina Aguilera in an almost desperate attempt to win the season was determined for her pick, second place winner 16 year New Jersey native Jacquie Lee to cop the crown, so she pulled our her powerful celebrity friends Lady Gaga and Jennifer Hudson among others to help her rally the troops for Jacquie's supports. When word got out that Gaga's intention to support Aguilera's pick may have been far from genuine- due to an ongoing twitter feud with Adam Levine, some of Chin's supporters were angered by the move and revved up their efforts for Tessanne votes to an overwhelming high. It paid off. Tessanne will receive a $100,000.00 cash prize and a Universal recording contract.
Word reaching Examiner at time of this publication's release is that scores of Tessanne Chin's supporters have converged in her island's capital of Kingston to celebrate her win. One observer likens the magnitude of the celebration to that of Obama's first inauguration.
