When one thinks of an electric car their first thought is usually, "efficient, yet boring." Tesla has managed to smash aside this common conception with their release of the Model X.
On February 9 Tesla announced the Model X, a stylized cross between an SUV and a minivan, which allowed Tesla to, once again, show the world that they are able to open up new design possibilities with their electric vehicles.
The Model X features "falcon wing" doors which borrow characteristics from the famous Lamborghini doors. These falcon wing doors open from the roof and flip up. The Model X is also packing an all new electric all-wheel drive system, which will help power the car through dense and snowy terrain.
Besides exceptional handling, the all-wheel drive system will also power the Model X to 60 mph in only five seconds. According to Tesla, "Model X is offered with optional Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive. The second motor enables more than all-weather, all-road capabilities: it increases torque by 50 percent. When outfitted with AWD, Model X Performance accelerates from 0 to 60 in less than five seconds, outperforming the fastest SUVs and many sports cars."
The Model X is not only just about performance, but also features a powertrain that is built around a flat battery pack that extends from the front to rear wheels. This allows the Model X to have more interior room than a vehicle which usually has a transmission running underneath it.
And, according to CBS News, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was able to demonstrate the ample room in the Model X by standing up inside of it. The Model X includes three rows of seats and Tesla claims that it is able to comfortably seat seven adults and their luggage.
Reservations for the Model X started yesterday, February 10. It is expected to be available next year for $55,000 to $75,000 before tax rebates and incentives.
