Yup. It's this crap again.
Despite many religious authoritarians having tried and failed to convince all but the most ardent extremists that not enabling Catholics to discriminate is discriminatory against Catholics, many are still trying.
The latest to do so is Terry Jeffrey, writes wrote in a TownHall.com column that "Beginning now, with the opening of government-run health-insurance exchanges, President Barack Obama will be prohibiting American Catholics from practicing their faith in the way they live their daily lives.
"This is an act of tyranny," writes Jeffrey. "Yet, many Americans in positions of public authority and influence have greeted it with silence and inaction.
"I do not use the word tyranny lightly here. Obama is abusing his power as president to unilaterally impose on Catholics -- and millions of other Americans who share the Catholic moral view on certain matters -- a regulation that forces them to act against their moral convictions and the teachings of their faith.
"He has declared war on their souls."
Jeffrey's gripe is with with the Affordable Care Act's provisions for contraception and abortion, which he has apparently willed himself to believe are now mandatory for all Obamacare recipients in order for him to justify his hatred of it.
"At no time has he offered to exempt from it those individual Americans whom he has put in the position of needing to choose between obeying his bureaucratic mandate and the teachings of their faith."
Lost in all of this ranting is the fact that the religious liberties of the healthcare providers were never in question. What is being attacked instead are the rights of the patient.
Once again, the argument being presented is that Obama is discriminating against Catholics for not allowing them to force their beliefs upon others.
Nobody is asking that Terry Jeffrey get an abortion. Only that he stay out of the way should anyone else in the country seek one instead.
