Fox football analyst and NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshow is blaming his Sunday FUBAR on fellow Fox analyst Jimmy Johnson. Bradshaw was accused of racism after comparing a TD run by Miami Dolphins RB Reggie Bush to someone chasing a "bucket of chicken."
Bradshaw's exact quote was as follows (see video), and was made as he was describing the remarkable 18-yard touchdown run Bush made against the Indianapolis Colts, in which Bush seemed to make half of the Colts defense look confused:
Look at this, Jimmy, like he was chasing that bucket of chicken that the wind was blowing the other day.
The problem with that quote was not lost to everyone. Since Bush is African-American, Fox studio host Curt Menefee, who is also African-American, could be heard groaning and asking,
"What are we going to do with him?"
Many have jumped to the conclusion that the mention of a bucket of chicken means there was a racial bias to Bradshaw's comment. Instead, Bradshaw has claimed it's all about Johnson's love of a studio meal, and Jimmy Johnson has backed him up, as well.
Speaking to TMZ, Bradshaw said he was unaware of the controversy until friends began calling him on Monday morning.
Apparently, as Bradshaw explained and as Johnson confirmed, it is a Sunday tradition for Johnson to order a bucket of KFC chicken after they wrap the pre-game show. In addition, Johnson "won't share it with anybody" according to Bradshaw.
Johnson said, "Every Sunday I get 4 pieces of fried chicken, dark meat, and I eat it right there on the set."
Menefee backed up the two of them, tweeting the information that the comment was meant to be directed toward Johnson.
Bradshaw added,
I'm having a hard time with this ... because that's not me. I never put those two things together because I don't think like that, [however] I understand why people are upset because they don't know the inside story.
