Terrie Hall of the smoker commercial is dead. As reported at CBS News on Sept. 16, 2013, Hall, a North Carolina woman, died at the age of 53. She was a former smoker, a gaunt woman ravished by cigarettes, and she had her voice box removed leaving a hole on the front of her neck. She began smoking in high school. Eventually, she contracted oral and throat cancer with the cancer spreading to her brain.
"She was a public health hero," said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "She may well have saved more lives than most doctors do."
The Terrie Hall smoker commercial turned out to be the most popular, receiving more than 2.8 million views on YouTube. In the commercial, she puts on a wig, false teeth and covers the hole on her throat with a scarf. It's a stark image of what can happen to a person who chain smokes.
