‘Terra Nova’ on Fox, which aired December 19th, had two of the best episodes that should have started the series off. The last two hours was fast paced, edge of your seat fun that had a mystery ending that has one question on the minds of fans everywhere. Actually make that two questions. 1. What exactly is the Badlands and 2. Will there be a season 2?
I couldn’t believe how good this finale was. Of course I could have done without the cuteness of Zoe Shannon interacting with Commander Taylor, but I guess the writers were trying to interject the family friendly feelings with that scene. Guess what? Not needed. Why?
Well the Terra Novians were fighting for survival, for their very lives and for most of us who love sci-fi that very fight makes us understand what is at stake and we get it. No need to force feed a little girl to the masses.
And what an interesting take it was. I am going to assume that the writers/directors ran out of money as that is the only way to explain why I did not see Terra Nova come under attack. Even though for the most part, the scenes were awesome, I am a bit disappointed that they had the main character wake up three days later to a pretty much devastated compound and the villains assured of their victory.
Now were the villains a bit too over the top? Yes and it worked. Lucas was mad scientist crazy projecting his insecurities on why the planet had to be depleted of its resources. The business man who worked for the Phoenix group was such a cliché of all henchmen across the fiction world that it worked. Especially since Terra Nova was heavy with the cliché. And of course the military bought and paid for by the Phoenix group were the stereotypical storm troopers from that other sci-fi movie. They even missed hitting their targets time and time again.
With that said, I enjoyed the pacing and the action that was apparent in this finale. As I stated, this should have started the series off. Then the writers could have wrote in scenes of memory to tell their story of what happened and why Hope Plaza had to be destroyed. The way this finale ended well it definitely has people hungry for more. Even with the death of Wash. If there is a season 2, she will be missed.
Here are a few tweets after the finale:
@Smitz115I think #Terranova just solved the issue of the Bermuda Triangle :-P
@martyallee I really, really hope #TerraNovagets picked up for Season 2. The storyline they set up with the 16th century time fracture.... Can't wait!
@SeanjMcCabe WTF is in the badlands?? What's with this ship? This show just turned ultra LOST-like. #terranova#lost blackrock

@Gillybean729 Wow. That was an amazing finale of #TerraNova. Had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! Now i want a season 2.
Just from this alone, you can see that fans are excited for the storyline to continue. And what a mystery for them to unfold in season 2. First off we have all contact from 2149 gone. At least that is the impression we are left with, especially after seeing Mira’s look of “I’m gonna make Taylor pay” on her face. Then there is the mystery of the Badlands that somehow has artifacts from Earth. What is the Badlands? And why did the writers name it that? I swear I heard that referenced in so many sci-fi movies and westerns that I know they could have come up with a better name. But I digress. I am more interested and invested of what it all means.
With no Hope Plaza, the people of 2149 last hope blew up. Does that mean we will never see the future again? If the writers were going to take clichés and storylines from other sci-fi shows, well they need to take from the 4400, being that people from the future snatched people from the past, brought them to the future then seeded them back into the present. I guess what I am saying is that I want to know how the future is effected by all the shenanigans happening in the past. Is that too much to ask?
Overall this finale was solid. It held up from beginning to end, and even though the cute factor was forced in some scenes, the rest of the scenes satisfied when it needed. I am hoping that Fox sees the reaction to the finale and seriously renews. While I’d hate a short run series, 13 episodes is a good number. And last but certainly not least, Shannon and a dino running in slow-mo across Hope Plaza as it slowly blew up around them. Can we say epic? And that is why season 2 must happen. For moments just like that.
