Terps routed by Buckeyes, 76-60

In what was a preview of what is to come in the future, the Maryland Terrapins were not even really competititve in a 76-60 loss to the No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Maryland was still representing the ACC in this year's challenge, but that will all change next year with the move to the Big Ten. After last night, I'm not sure the Big Ten is all that thrilled about joining forces with the Terps.

Once again, Maryland's defensive issues became apparent early and often. The Terps did a poor job of guarding the three-point line early in the contest and allowed easy drives to the basket, particularly in the second half.

Maryland's half-court offense remains stagnant. In many cases, it ended up being Dez Wells or Roddy Peters eventually attacking the basket off the dribble because of the lack of ball movement.

Despite such a poor start, Maryland cut the deficit to nine with just a few minutes remaining in the first half, and it appeared that maybe a result similar to that of the Connecticut game was possible. However, the wheels came off the cart before the half, as sloppy play and turnovers allowed Ohio State to build the lead to 17.

The lead grew to well over 20 at one point in the second half, though the final score doesn't look too terribly bad thanks to a lot of garbage-time baskets in the final minutes.

Dez Wells led the team with 19 points, but 17 of those came in the second half, many of which were in those final minutes. Jake Layman scored just two points and Nick Faust was actually benched to start the second half.

The loss snaps a four-game winning streak for the Terps, who are now 5-3 on the season and won't be getting that signature out-of-conference win to put on its resume this season. Maryland will take part in the BB&T Classic this weekend, taking on George Washington, before traveling to Chesnut Hill to take on Boston College in the first ACC game of the season.
