Terps lock up Locksley

The Maryland Terrapins made sure offensive coordinator Mike Locksley won't be going anywhere anytime soon, "locking" him up to a three-year contract extension at $600,000 per year.

The new contract will make Locksley one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in all of the Big Ten and seems to indicate that Maryland is ready to step up to the plate and try to hang with the big boys in their new conference.

Locksley is regarded as the team's ace recruiter and the coach that has really helped to keep top players in the state during his short time at Maryland. It's been his ability to land big-time recruits that seems to have turned around the Randy Edsall era, which got off to a very rocky start.

It also leads to speculation about the future of Edsall, whose contract also runs out in 2017, just like Locksley. It seems that the Maryland athletic director and school president may be more confident in the current regime going forward.

Also, Locksley's son is a highly-regarded high school quarterback at Gilman that is being recruited heavily by Maryland. This contract certainly isn't just to get his son to Maryland, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

Considering the new deal and the fact that Locksley is from the area, it also seems to make it a sure bet that he will stay at Maryland even if he receives interest from other big-time programs.
