Terps fall late to NC State, 65-56

The Maryland Terrapins got off to a slow start but recovered by halftime to take a nine-point lead, only to fall apart in the second half in a 65-56 loss to the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

The Terps missed their first 10 shots of the game to fall behind by seven, and both teams struggled to score for much of the first half. Maryland eventually got some shots to fall, capped by a Jake Layman three-pointer as time expired in the first half.

The second half was a different story, as NC State came out of the locker room energized and shooting the ball much better. Ralston Turner was on fire in the second half and finished with 23 points. Maryland couldn't contain him.

It was a great opportunity for the Terps to pick up another road win in the conference, especially with NC State's top player, T.J. Warren, sidelined with an ankle injury.

Instead, Maryland lost to a young, inexperienced team lacking in talent and without by far their best player. While the Terps have had some bad losses this year, this might be the worst considering the other ones occurred while Seth Allen was sidelined with an injury.

Allen really struggled shooting the ball against the Wolfpack, and Roddy Peters failed to make an impact, rendering the point guard position a serious issue. Dez Wells also struggled, scoring just 10 points. Jake Layman wasn't any better, adding just five points.

Maryland falls to 3-3 in the ACC and, to make matters worse, now heads home to face a Pittsburgh team that beat them by 20 points just a couple of weeks ago. Mark Turgeon's job isn't in jeopardy given that he is only in year three of an eight-year contract, but he is certainly feeling a lot of heat over the lack of improvement in his tenure at Maryland.
