Terps fall just short again, this time to Syracuse, 57-55

There was a lot of hype building up to Maryland's matchup with then No. 1 Syracuse at the Comcast Center, only for the Orange to lose two straight games.

It certainly took away some of the anticipation of the game from the Terps side, and facing Syracuse after they lost two straight also didn't play in their favor.

Syracuse got off to a quick start and was in control most of the way, but had to hold on for a 57-55 victory.

It wasn't that Syracuse played exceptionally well, but Maryland just played that poorly. After outstanding efforts at Virginia and Duke, the Terps were very sloppy with the ball in a win over hapless Wake Forest.

Maryland was equally sloppy with the ball against Syracuse, but the difference is the Orange actually made them pay instead of simply returning the favor.

Seth Allen single-handedly kept the Terps in the game with his three-point shooting in the first half, but was among those guilty of carelessness with the basketball.

He struggled so much at one point in the second half that Mark Turgeon took him out of the game because he couldn't touch the ball without turning it over.

Maryland finally stopped turning the ball over late in the second half, and that allowed them to cut the deficit from double digits down to just one. Still, the Terps once again couldn't find a way to seal the deal in the final moments.

It's a frustrating step backward for the Terps, but one that very much could have been anticipated given the effort against Wake Forest, combined with Syracuse being on a two-game losing streak.

The loss all but assures that Maryland will not make the NCAA tournament unless they can win the ACC tournament. Had Maryland beaten Syracuse, there was probably a scenario where they could have done enough the rest of the way to put them on the bubble, but that's no longer the case.
