Terps accept bid to Military Bowl

As expected, the Maryland Terrapins will be playing in the Military Bowl in Annapolis after accepting their invitation to play in the game.

It seemed like Maryland was destined for the Military Bowl once they reached six wins to become eligible. The ACC certainly wasn't going to lobby on Maryland's behalf to try and get them an invitation to a more prestigious bowl game considering they will be leaving the conference for the Big Ten beginning next season.

Maryland will face off against Marshall, a quality Conference USA team. Marshall lost its conference title game but took Virginia Tech to three overtimes before losing earlier in the season.

They have a quality quarterback and a good defense that should cause Maryland some problems. Maryland played another Conference USA opponent, East Carolina, the last time they played in a bowl game back in 2010. Ironically, it was also the Military Bowl, but it was played at RFK Stadium.

While I'm sure the Terps would be more excited if they were traveling to an exotic destination for their bowl game, there are advantages to staying close to home. The team will be very familiar with its surroundings, there should be a lot of family and fan support at the game and the players will be home for the holidays and New Year's Eve.

Maryland should also be pleased they didn't get shut out of a bowl completely, which was unlikely but possible given that more ACC teams qualified than the conference has tie-ins.

Either way, it's a major step forward for a program that hasn't been to a bowl since 2010. The football program certainly seems to be having more success than the basketball program at the moment, which is hard to believe.
