Terhune Orchards offers gingerbread decorating for kids on Tuesday

Terhune Orchards, that great place for picking your own apples and pumpkins in the fall and berries and peaches in the summer is offering their first "Read and Explore" session of 2013. On Tuesday, January 15, at 10 a.m., they will start by reading "The Gingerbread Man" and then follow with a decorating of their very own gingerbread man to take home.

Terhune Orchards, run by Pam and Gary Mount is dedicated to educating its younger visitors. Apple picking, pumpkin picking, cider, pies, farm animals, pick your own, field trips, farm market, gift baskets and more can be found at the Mount Family's 200 fruit and vegetable-producing acres noted for quality products and country-style service. Terhune Orchards Farm Store attracts local people doing their daily shopping as well as visitors on their way through the Princeton area. The Farm Store and Farm Yard are open every day all year.

The "Read and Explore" schedule for the rest of the year is:

Animal Tracks - February 5, Tuesday
They will read two books, "Owl Moon" and “When Winter Comes.” After story time, they will make bird feeders with wild bird seed for everyone to take home and help the birds through winter. Weather permitting they will visit their farm animals and see if they can match tracks to each animal.

"Fur, Feather, Fluff: Keeping Warm in Winter"- Tuesday, February 19. Learn about how animals keep themselves warm in winter. They will read two stories about animals and explore the sense of touch with wool, feathers, etc. Each child will make a paper bag animal to take home with lots of "fluff."

Getting Ready for Spring- Tuesday March 12
Get ready to wake up from winter and prepare to start gardening. As Saint Patrick’s Day is the traditional day to plant peas and spinach and get the garden ready, they will start their gardens early! The reading is a selection from “Frog and Toad are Friends." Each child plants seeds to take home.

Composting - April 2, Tuesday
Learn about turning "garbage" back into soil. Read stories about worms and compost. Each child makes a compost container to take home.

Birds, Nesting and Birdhouses - Tuesday, April 23

Birds re starting to think about making homes for their babies. They will read stories about birds. Each child make nesting material and bird house to take home.

Parents/guardians and young children ages preschool to eight years are welcome to the "Read and Explore" programs. Each program costs $5.00 per participating child and includes the materials for the activity.
