'TERA' will no longer require a subscription fee starting this February (Photos)

En Masse Entertainment announced today that the action-packed "TERA" MMO will be free-to-play this February. A subscription will still be available for purchase but it will no longer be required to play the game. The developer promises that new, existing, and former players will all benefit from the transition.

Instead of restricting access to what already exists in the game, En Masse Entertainment wants everyone to have access to the entire game. There are just bonuses for subscribing or having supported the game in the past.

Simply, a subscriber is considered to have an Elite Status. A free player is considered Standard and a former player is considered a Founder. Founders seemingly lose nothing for staying at the Founder level and only gain extras by becoming an Elite Status member. A Standard account can do all of what Elite Status and Founders can do with only a few exceptions to quantity. For example, Standard players can only send 10 gold per mailed message.

A matrix displaying the difference between account types can be found here. Please note that Founders can start playing for free right now in preparation for the transition.

Finally, the game's Associate Producer posted on the forums about what players can expect from the in-game store. Including what is available now like cosmetic items and account services, convenience items and more will be also available. These items will cost new currency called En Masse Points (EMP). EMP, of course, will be available for purchase with real-world money.

Be sure to check out the FAQ on the transition.
