Tuesday, the Venezuelan government sent 12 tons of food and basic necessities to Guatemala for victims of the recent volcanic eruption and Tropical Storm Agatha; the aid had to be shipped in because many bridges are out. Guatemala has been struggling since the two natural disasters hit less than two weeks ago.
For the last few days, ShelterBox has been in the Guatemala area to assess needs as well, and they are sending relief tents and life-saving supplies. It is estimated that over 5,000 people are in need around the area.
Tropical Storm Agatha brought severe flooding and landslides and washed away fields of maize, banana, sugar cane and coffee, leaving many residents without food. 24 bridges were also destroyed in and around Guatemala by the natural disasters, and this has made it difficult for aid to reach the city.
About 10 days ago, Guatemala was hit with Tropical Storm Agatha, and a volcanic eruption that layered Guatemala City in three inches of ash. Over 180 people have been reported dead from Tropical Storm Agatha in and around Guatemala.
