Last minute negotiations between British Airways and its cabin crew union were suspended after a group of protesters interrupted the talks. BA chief Willie Walsh was reportedly escorted under police protection from the ACAS negotiation service building. The general secretary of the Unite union criticised the actions of the protesters and expressed hopes that the talks would resume on May 23.
Mediators brought British Airways management and union representative together on May 22 in an attempt to avert a series of strikes set to begin on May 24. The original strike dates included 20 days of strikes, spread out over:
• May 18-22 (stopped by court injunction)
• May 24-28,
• May 30-June 3, and
• June 5-9.
Baring a last minute settlement, the travel industry is braced for renewed strikes beginning on May 24. Schedules and information can be found on the British Airways website and travelers should check for updates frequently.
