Tennis fans attending day one of the 2013 Australian Open Wildcard Playoffs saw a little bit of everything one would expect to see at the professional tennis tournament.

That included three-set thrillers, a comeback, an upset and even a back-and-forth three-setter to close out the day.

This annual event, held indoors at Life Time Athletic at Peachtree Corners awards one male and one female player with the USTA's wildcards in the first major championship of 2014.

That means about a $40,000 payday, even with a first round loss in Melbourne.

One the women's side, it was a day the former college players in the draw might want to forget.

Teenager Victoria Duval overcame a slow start against former USC player Maria Sanchez in the first feature match of the day 7-5, 7-5.

Trailing 1-4, Duval said she didn't do anything special, she just started playing better.

"I definitely had a rough start," sighed Duval. "I think I was little nervous too. I think at 4-1, I started making some more balls."

At the same time, Grace Min, from Lawrenceville, Georgia took down former NCAA singles champ and Stanford player Nicole Gibbs 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

In a very intense match on Court 3, Madison Brengle and Sachia Vickery both went to the third set looking winded after numerous long points. But Vickery held it together even after being called for numerous foot faults to take the win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Vickery was surprised by the foot fault calls.

"Normally I never get called for a foot fault since I don't move my left foot," Vickery told reporters after the match.

In the final women's match of the day, top seeded Shelby Rogers dispensed of former North Carolina player Sanaz Marand who was a last-second fill in for Julia Cohen.

Winners in the men's draw were Denis Kudla, Steve Johnson, Tennys Sandgren, and Chase Buchanan.

Semifinals are set for Saturday and the finals will be played on Sunday.

Who will be left standing on Sunday with an Australian Open Wildcard in their hand?

Vickery went on the record with a prediction.

"Whoever wants it more and whoever fights more this week (will win.)"
