According to Tuesday's WQAD News, a man in Rock Falls, Ill., is accused of moving out of a rental home and leaving his dog behind in a cage to die.
On March 24, Larry Smith, who was hired to clean up after the tenant moved out of the Lincoln Street home, made the gruesome discovery in the backyard.
A cage, sitting in the midst of other discarded trash, held the body of a young, brindle pit bull who appeared to have starved to death; no food or water was left inside of the dog's kennel.
Smith contacted the police, who advised him to put the dog's remains in a trash bag.
Animal control had visited the property earlier this month after the man's ex-wife advised them that her former husband had moved and left the dog behind. Responding officers did not see the caged dog and left the property.
Following the discovery of the dog's body, the local animal control has launched an investigation and charges against the former tenant may be pending.
