Ten ways to love your car and keep it around longer

Hey it's Valentine's Day and believe or not, there are those of us who really do love our cars but really don't know how best to care for them.  If you truly love your ride, want it to hang around for a while and remain in tip-top condition, take heed of these tips:

1) Roll all of your short trips into one.  Wear and tear takes place within the first few minutes of driving.  De-stress your engine by running several errands at one time and during low peak traffic hours.

2) Maintain your tire's treads by staying within the speed limits, avoiding road hazards like potholes, not aiming for curbs and definitely not burning rubber!  Don't forget to keep them properly inflated and rotate them about every 6,000 to 7,500 miles.

3) No need to constantly rev up your car before you take off in the morning which can truly tax your engine

4) Don't drive on fumes it may cause sediment in the bottom of your tank to clog the fuel pump pickup, the fuel filter or fuel injectors, and it also may cause the electric fuel pump inside the tank to overheat.

6) Bulky key chains can wear out the tumblers inside the ignition, so lighten the load of keys on your ring.

7) Keep an eye on your power steering fluid, if it runs low have the hoses and pump inspected for any possible leaks.

8) Don't drain your battery by leaving lights on, doors ajar or prolonged switch on headlights

9) Don't exceed the weight capacity of your vehicle.  The extra pounds that car owners can add onto their vehicles with everything from camping gear to piling on huge pieces of plywood on its roof can cause some serious damage.   Exceeding a vehicle's maximum weight capacity can put a strain on the springs, wheel bearings, tires and suspension system, especially if it's an older car; braking effectiveness will also be reduced.  You also risk putting a strain on the engine and overheating especially on a hilly road.  If you don't know your vehicle's weight max check your owner's manual.

10) Wax your car every now and then.  Regular waxing helps protect your car's paint job and forms a barrier against life's annoyances like bird droppings and tree sap.  How often should you wax your car?  Well, the easiest way to know when it's time to slap on a coat of wax is to perform a bead test on your car.  Just splash a small amount of water onto your vehicle, if the water beads in less than ½" diameter beads you don't need to wax, if it doesn't then it is time to slather it on!
