So it’s over, the racetracks are empty the drivers have gone away and the racing is done for 2011. We are now in the early days of what’s known as the NASCAR off season. For some fans it’s time to step away from the sport for a few months. For others though, NASCAR is almost like an addiction. It’s a habit that needs a fix, a fix that won’t happen over the long cold winter to come.
For those rabid NASCAR fans it almost takes an intervention to break the NASCAR habit. It’s for them and the rest of us that we offer the following suggestions to help break the NASCAR habit for a while and get us all through the NASCAR off season.
-Watch something on TV other than RaceDay built by the Home Depot and no, the races you DVR’d during the season don’t count, although reruns of Talladega Nights are perfectly acceptable.
-Reconnect with family and non-NASCAR friends, most of whom haven’t seen you since the Bud Shootout last February.
-Clean the garage and finally discover where you put that life-size driver standee that you dug out of the dumpster behind the 7-11 after the promotion was over two years ago.
-Go to the grocery and buy things that are made by a company that doesn’t have a NASCAR sponsorship.
-Drive like a normal commuter on the street; tailgating isn’t bump drafting, and Talladega is in Alabama not on your way to work.
-Spend time at work doing something other than tweaking your NASCAR fantasy league.
-Wear clothing that has no NASCAR markings on it. It may be hard since your non-NASCAR wardrobe consists of only one old T-shirt you find under your bed that you forgot you had.
-Watch other sports, such as the one where grown men in tight pants and weird helmets throw an oddly shaped ball back and forth. And no those yellow flags you see don’t mean that everyone has to slow down. And no we don’t get it either.
-Get out and enjoy the outdoors, go to a state park. And don’t worry, you don’t have to have a clear backpack and you can carry something larger than a 7x7 cooler.
-Go somewhere, anywhere on a Sunday. Sitting at home and staring at the TV won’t make a race suddenly appear.
-Or just give up entirely and count down the days until the green flag drops at Daytona and the 2012 season gets under way.
