Ten slimming snacks to take to work, the gym or have on hand for snack attacks

Surviving a day at the office requires intelligence, time management skills -- and a good supply of snacks. If your snack habits revolve around donuts in the lunchroom and the vending machine in the cafeteria, you may experience sugar highs...and lows. Not to mention an expanding waistline that will give you an unwelcome reason for shopping: Larger clothes.

In the same way, when you're time-pressured at home, the temptation to grab a sweet treat while you rush can overcome even the most determined diet dedication.

Solve these problems by choosing from these slimming snack solutions, from chocolate to nuts and beyond:

  1. Keep these snacks in the freezer: Pour one cup of unsweetened almond milk into the blender and spoon in one-half cup of canned pumpkin, 1/4 teaspoon ginger, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon. Blend at the highest level. Pour into individual "pudding pop" or plastic popsicle makers and freeze for fabulous "pumpkin ice cream" treats that will delight young and old.
  2. Have small bags on hand each time you buy a big bag of almonds or other nuts. Create portion-controlled servings to have on hand.
  3. Hard-boil eggs, peel and keep in cold water in the refrigerator. Love spicy foods? Try using salsa as a dip.
  4. Give a high-five to fresh fruit. A banana, for example, contains potassium. Slip it (no pun intended!) in your gym bag or locker, and you've got an easily digested, sweet snack to keep you going.
  5. No time to munch your way through an apple? Try individually portioned, pop-top cans of fruit. Make sure to choose the variety canned in fruit juice, such as sliced peaches. But be cautious of dried fruits, which are calorie-dense.
  6. Spread almond butter on sliced apples or celery.
  7. Punt out the potato chips and corral the corn chips. Instead, jog over to the health food section and look at options such as veggie chips. These selections, particularly when partnered with fruit, can help your energy level stay high.
  8. Cut up avocado and have slices with tomatoes for a filling helping of healthy snacks.
  9. Love crispy bacon sandwiches? Make a "sandwich" with lettuce leaves as the base topped with crunchy turkey bacon and tomatoes.
  10. Enjoy a small square of dark chocolate without guilt: Look for a high percentage of cocoa. As Dr. William Lagakos phrases it, "intact dark chocolate" is best for the body and mind. Steer clear of white chocolate.
