Ten Marks summer Math program to prevent summer learning loss in students

As summer vacation arrives parents may be rightfully concerned about their children undergoing summer learning loss, a process by which students start forgetting, over the course of the two-month break, much of what they learned in school. The loss is especially acute for students struggling to retain various Math skills and concepts; research shows that when students forget much of what they've already learned, schools wind up spending at least a quarter of the year simply helping them review previous year lessons. This takes away the time that should have been better spent teaching students new concepts and ideas, particularly in Math.

Ten Marks Education, founded by entrepreneurs Andrew Joseph and Rohit Agarwal, has thus made it a mission to help students retain their knowledge of Math through its summer math programs. These programs are meant to not only help students retain whatever basic Math concepts they have learned in years past, but also to build on that foundation by learning new skills and concepts for the upcoming year.

The program consists of a series of online worksheets that students complete at their own pace. If they require help in solving a particular Math problem, they can either choose to use up to three hints to help them figure out the answer or watch an online video lesson teaching them the Math concepts needed to solve that problem. On average students spend up to 20 minutes a day completing a given worksheet and are given assignments up to three times per week.

Parents are notified about their children's progress through weekly online reports and are allowed to customize the program to better suit students' needs. Parents can also help motivate kids towards completing their Ten Marks assignments through printing out Ten Marks certificates and helping them track their progress online towards receivng a tangible reward.

The program is meant to last up to twelve weeks and is available for students from Grade 3 through high school. As mentioned earlier students work at their own pace so they are allowed to take indefinite breaks from Ten Marks from time to time (for example when they go away for camp/sleepover at a friend's house). Students can either practice whatever Math concepts they learned from previous school years and build upon that by learning new concepts for the upcoming year, or practice understanding "foundational" concepts for advanced-level Math such as fractions, algebra, geometry, data and statistics. Each program generally costs $39/student.
