When you're planning any kind of adventure, especially one that takes you on some rugged roads into the back country, there are some tools and equipment that it's vital to have along for the ride, just in case you find yourself in an emergency situation. Whether you're off-roading, exploring, or just trying to get to that favorited hunting, fishing, hiking, or camping spot, here is a list that you shouldn't leave home without:

1) A spare tire. Make sure you have a spare that is the same size as the other tires on your vehicle. If you're going somewhere known for a lot of flat tires, consider having two spares. A spare can also be used in a pinch as a sturdy surface from which to jack a vehicle.

2) High-lift jack
. These essential pieces of equipment can be used in a variety of ways. From helping you get out of a high-centered situation, to being used as a winch, to the implied use of changing a flat.

3) Shovel
. Don't leave home without it! The uses are many, of course, but chief among them is helping you to get unstuck.

4) A bow saw
. These saws can come in handy in a number of ways. From cutting firewood, to cutting branches to put under your wheels to help you get unstuck.

5) A good tool kit. A good kit should include a large hammer, screwdrivers, multiple sizes of open-end wrenches, pliers, a good ratchet with both shallow and deep sockets, a pipe wrench, channel locks, and some duct tape.

6) A first aid kit. Get a basic kit with bandaids, disinfectant, gauze, tape, and other common needs in the event of an injury. Also throw in some aspirin or other pain relieving medications. And don't forget to include any personal medications you take on a daily basis.

7) Flashlight. You never know when you're going to need one. If you break down, it isn't always going to be during daylight hours, and even if it is, a flashlight can help you locate that hard to find area beneath the vehicle or engine.

8) Jumper cables. Don't expect the next vehicle that comes along will have them to give you a jump if your battery dies. Carry your own.

9) Extra fluids. Fluids include oil, gas, antifreeze, power steering fluid, brake fluid, etc.

10) A tarp. Nothing worse than having to work on your vehicle in the mud. You could also use it as an improvised shelter if necessary to stave off a downpour.

Other things you may want to bring include a selection of electrical parts, such as fuses and relays; a selection of vehicle parts, such as belts and hoses, u-joints, clutch line hoses etc.; a means to contact someone, such as a cell phone or cb radio; and various other useful items such as baling wire, an air compressor, fix-a-flat, a tow strap or chain, and a survival kit.

Having the right tool when you need it can save a lot of needless frustration. Put these essentials in your vehicle and have a safe trip.
