Damon Harris, former member of The Temptations and best known for singing tenor on “Papa was a Rolling Stone,” died Monday, Feb. 18, at Joseph Richey Hospice in Baltimore from prostate cancer, CNN reported today.
Harris’ daughter, Erica Harris Outlaw, said that her father had been battling prostate cancer for the last 14 years.
"He was in great pain for the last several months," she said.
"He was the kind of dad where you wanted the best for him. We're going to really miss him," Outlaw said. "We miss him already."
When Damon joined the the Temptations in 1971, he was only 20-years-old and replaced Eddie Kendricks, one of the founding members of the Motown group.
Harris stayed with the Temptations until 1975. Harris also released a solo album, "Damon Harris: Silk" in the 1970s.
"I am saddened to hear about Damon," said Dennis Edwards, who was in the band with him.
"He will be missed."
Harris released one solo album in the ‘70s, "Damon Harris: Silk."
As a teenager, Harris had formed a Temptations tribute band named The Young Tempts, a.k.a. The Young Vandals.
In his later years, Harris founded and was CEO of The Damon Harris Cancer Foundation, dedicated to promoting the awareness, diagnosis, and treatment of prostate cancer.
