Mirus Gallery at Temple Night Club in SOMA opened a new art show Saturday night with fifteen women artists depicting women. Janelle Wisehart's photo from 2012 called "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", an archival ink project, garnered some attention and amusement. One of the female figures photographed is wearing a teddy, so to speak. Her panties are made of brown fur and the front sports a ferocious stuffed bear face. Grrrrrrrrr.

Other women featuring their visions of women often seemed quiet and still, isolated studies or portraits. These included Kimberly Brooks' oils on linen. She displayed "Cashmere" from 2011 and "Janie Bryant" from 2010, a 1950s era red head with pearls and a green party dress, flopped on the couch as if being hostess of the party had exhausted her. A relaxed moment for a perfect 1950s hostess.
Mercedes Helnwein depicted girls in black pencil on paper, a simple medium for depicting virginal innocence and even alienation and blossoming beauty. Her collection of four ranges from the isolation in "Summer and Door" of 2012 and prim schoolgirlhood in "Shelby"of 2013 to 1940s country freshness and beauty in "Wind" of 2009 and more seductive and sensual allure in "Caitlin P" of 2009.
Some paintings seemed Mardi Grasesque with the women's faces painted vibrantly but with blue masks.
All of the art displayed seemed to be of one woman and passive which seemed to make Janelle Wisehart's all the more surprising, her funny and quirky takes blow the viewer away.
Most of the guests at the show looked trendy, young, casual and friendly with just as many men as women.
Meanwhile the dance club itself is green and features a dance floor that absorbs it's energy from the dancers while the restaurant serves sustainable sushi.
Paul Hemming's Temple Night Club is easily accessible from Montgomery Street BART and bikeable with many bikes locked to the parking meters.
