The situation in Tibet has been critical on a daily basis. The Central Tibetan Administration has reported on March 7, 2013, What is happening in Tibet is genocide: Telo Rinpoche. Telo Rinpoche, who is the spiritual leader of the Kalmyk people of Russian Federation, has said what has been happening in Tibet is genocide.
Telo Rinpoche has said it was unfortunate that world leaders are not doing anything about the tragic situation which exists in Tibet. Telo Rinpoche made these comments while speaking at a side-event at the UN in Geneva sponsored by five NGOs on “The People’s Republic of China: Threat to the Survival of Tibetan Buddhism”. Rinpoche stated that the survival of Tibetan Buddhism affects not only the Tibetan people but also the entire world. He emphasized that the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism is also the survival of Tibetan Buddhist science and philosophy.
Telo Rinpoche has also said Tibetan Buddhism can be only studied through Tibetan language and the Chinese government has been placing restrictions on the Tibetan language. Telo Rinpoche was born to a Kalmyk Mongolian family in the U.S., and he studied at a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in South India at the age of 7. The long tradition of Mongolians studying in Tibet was no longer an option for him due to China’s occupation and repression in Tibet. He visited Tibet in 2003, but he said he was not allowed to travel or meet Tibetans freely.
