In an effort to spread the understanding and appreciation of jazz music to area young people, the organizers of the Telluride Jazz Festival are offering students a 50 % discount on admission prices to the annual event. Students from middle school to college age are eligible for the discount. Children age 12 and under are free. The offer is part of the community outreach program of the Telluride Society for Jazz. There are also volunteer opportunities available for those interested in participating more directly with the Festival.
Beginning in 1977, the Telluride Jazz Festival has hosted jazz artists proficient in all aspects of the genre: classical, African, blues and Latin and more. This year's event will begin Friday, August 2 and conclude on Sunday (New Orleans Day), August 4. Attendees have enjoyed concerts in both indoor and outdoor venues. Some of the groups scheduled to appear this year include the Stanley Clarke Band, Galactic, The Motet and Telluride's own Telluride Student All-Star Jazz Ensemble. The aim of the festival is to entertain and educate its visitors in the many delights of the jazz genre.
Camping for families and individuals is available along with lodging in the town itself. For more information about the Festival or to buy tickets, visit the Festival website, or call 970.729.2009. Yvonne Meek, festival intern, is also available to help. Her number is 970.208.2456.
