TellmeG sensor a 'game changer' in sports metrics

See also

“The TellmeG is unlike any existing measuring instrument and the potential applications are endless. The range of this sensor goes far beyond typical accelerometers found in popular smartphones (usually 2G to 8G at most),” says Kelsec Systems founder Gerald Plamondon.

Many think he is right.

Kelsec is betting that it's brand new TellMeG sensor will be successful in measuring just about every metric in the world of sports when it comes to acceleration and deceleration.

Think running shoes in track and field, clubs in golf, rackets in tennis, bats in baseball and softball, and engines in motorsports.

The TellmeG will provide real-time feedback using an OLED high tech display. What it will measure depends on the sport, but it can measure acceleration up to 200 G or 4400 mph. Software and applications powered by Atmel's versatile ATmega328 microcontroller will assist in the endeavor.

In sports metrics, the trick is not only being able to measure speeds, distances, etc., but also making sure they are exact. If they aren't accurate, the data is worthless and you've wasted time and money.

From Kelsac, here is what coaches, players, and trainers can expect from the TellMeG:

On-board 16Mbit Flash.
OLED Display (128X32 pixels).
Three-Axis (X,Y,Z) on board accelerometers (+/-200G and +/- 16G).
Accelerometer (200G) data rate: 1kHz.
MCU flashing via ISP programmer (external port provided) and custom cable.
Data-logging capabilities for review and analysis.
Rechargeable lithium-polymer battery (via USB cable).
Sleep mode to conserve power.
Battery monitoring IC for maintaining the LIPO battery.

Is it ready to go?

“Currently, five versions of application code for the TellmeG sensor have been developed and tested for: baseball, running, tennis, mountain biking and impact/landing," offers up Plamondon. "All five are available to choose from, depending on your needs. We plan on developing more applications in the near future.”

Those in other sports are happy hear that. The possibilities are endless when it comes to just the world of fitness and personal training. Add is every other sport under the sun and Kelsac is currently the "leader in the clubhouse" when it comes to sports sensors.

Sure to be a field and an industry to watch in 2014.
