Last week, Congress had the audacity to adjourn for a HOLIDAY without extending unemployment compensation for nearly two million Americans whose benefits have expired since May. They didn’t bother to consider how those families, including thousands in the Pittsburgh area, are supposed to pay their bills.
The break was scheduled, but it is not mandatory. Congressional leaders – Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-WA) and Harry Reid (D-NV) – could have arranged for the membership to delay their vacation out of respect and concern for their constituents. They could have forced the Republicans to vote or to explain themselves. They could have forced the Republicans to
filibuster the bill in person, on camera, every day. Their behavior is absolutely irresponsible, arrogant, unfathomable, unnecessary, unconscionable, and cruel. Once again, the Democrats are avoiding the tough issues.
The problem in Congress is that the Republicans have no morals and the Democrats have no “spine”.
So.
Be your own lobbyist. If you’ll be without unemployment benefits until Congress feels like getting around to it, visit, write, phone, fax, and email Pelosi, Reid, and your own representatives in the House and the Senate.
Tell them how far behind you are in your mortgage, utilities, and car payments. Tell them if your children are going hungry. Tell them if you’re collecting public assistance benefits. Tell them how close you are to losing your home. Tell them how much money you need to pay your bills.
And then tell them to send that much money to you – from their own pockets.
Go ahead. Make them squirm.
Spread the word.
