Here are this week's top television releases on DVD according to Best Buy
Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series: A military science fiction drama created as a re-image of the Battlestar Galactica series which started airing in 1978. The series first aired as a three-hour miniseries in December 2003 on the Sci Fi network and ran for four seasons thereafter, ending its run on March 20, 2009.
The story deals with survival of the human race during the apocalyptic fall-out of the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol as well as a war with the Cylons (man-made robots).
The series featured Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated Edward James Olmos and Academy Award-nominated Mary McDonnell and garnered a wide range of critical acclaim, including a Peabody Award and Emmy nominations for its writing and directing.
Torchwood: Children of Earth: Children stop moving and begin speaking in unison the phrase, “We are coming,” as this sci-fi thriller begins. Aliens (called the 456) are here to collect the children of the world and use them for…(no spoilers here). The Torchwood team attempts to intervene but also has to deal with a government that wants them eliminated. This excellent BBC television program is a spin off of the critically acclaimed series, Doctor Who. Torchwood seasons 1 & 2 are also available on DVD.
Dollhouse: Season 1: From Executive Producer Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel) and starring Eliza Dushku as Echo, a member of a group of people known as "Actives" or "Dolls". The Dolls are people whose personalities and existence in the outside world have been wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. These Actives are then hired out for particular jobs, which can be anything from crimes to fantasies to the occasional good deed. Echo begins to become self aware of her “Doll” persona.
The second season of Dollhouse begins September 25th on Fox.
Doctor Who: Planet of the Dead: the first of four special episodes to be broadcast throughout 2009 and early 2010, which serve as lead actor David Tennant's denouement as the Tenth Doctor. The Doctor attempts to return a bus from a dead planet while preventing a race of metallic stingray aliens from posing a threat to Earth.
This long running BBC series (1963-1989 & 2005-Current) has received critical acclaim including several British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA) nominations. The shows continued success, even though the Doctor character is heading towards it’s 11 portrayer, is a testament to it’s strong writing.
Knight Rider: Season 1: The short lived NBC program takes place 25 years after the original Knight Rider series (starring David Hasselhoff). Mike Traceur (Justin Bruening), son of the original Michael Knight, has become the driver of the next generation KITT (Knight Industries Three Thousand). Mike becomes the new champion of Knight Industries, a high tech government and law enforcement contractor.
