After playing Massey Hall to capacity crowds on Tuesday the 19th, one of Canada's favourite indie exports, Tegan and Sara, kept the Kool Haus ecstatic during their last stop in Toronto on Wednesday the 20th.
Touring in support of Sainthood, their sixth studio LP, the twins remained enthusiastic and charming during their 27-song set - even when politely kicking out a boisterous (and potentially violent) fan as he insisted on moshing to "Where Does the Good Go". (In all fairness, they warned him twice.)
From the moment they took to the stage, the crowd was enamored, cheering and screaming at nearly everything Tegan and Sara said, but quieting enough to allow the petite musicians to do their thing. Though the audience seemed to consist primarily of underage crowds (the show was all ages, read: similar to a night spent at the mall) Tegan and Sara engaged their audience knowingly, bantering, joking and truly cementing themselves as accessible musicians.
Opening with "Arrow" - the first track off their latest release - the band played primarily featuring new material, but kept their promise of playing "some old ones" as well. (Cue: further audience cheers.)
Eclipsing their recorded sound with raw talent and obvious love of performing, the artists kept it light both through situations gone awry (like when Sara was subject to a coughing fit) and moments of perfection (90% of the show).
Supported by Toronto's Gentleman Reg (who wonderfully complimented the twins' earnest set), Tegan and Sara remained gracious till the end, thanking their opener, their band and the crowds who loved them for a night in Toronto. Truly a wonderful evening, Tegan and Sara were truly worth the ticket price and at-times rowdy crowd, and I (in all my wisdom) absolutely suggest checking them out upon their return.
Their set list is available here.
