Teaching or tutoring abroad can provide you with a lot of great opportunities. You get the chance to help people, use an important skill you have learned, and travel the world. In order to do this, however, you will need to complete certification for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). This shows others you have put in the time and effort to learn everything there is to know about the foreign language, as well as teaching others English.

What is the TEFL Certification?
This is a type of certificate showing you have taken proper education and training to become a TEFL teacher, or a teacher who specializes in teaching others English as a foreign language. It requires 100 hours of training from an accredited school or organization that meets international standards. Most schools hiring TEFL teachers will in fact require that you have this certificate. Some things you will learn include the language, teaching and tutoring techniques, phonology, language awareness, methodology and a grading system.

TEFL Coursework and Training
To get your certification, 100 hours of specialized training is required. Different schools provide classes and training in different ways, such as weekend courses, online, or local schools providing a few essential classes. Some things you can expect to learn through the TEFL certification courses include providing assignments and projects to your students, grading their work, communicating effectively, learning about classroom management and teaching skills, how to help students use skills they have learned for learning English, and language awareness.

Becoming a TEFL Teacher
The first thing you must be able to do is speak both languages proficiently. If you are traveling to a foreign country to teach English, you need to know the other language fluently, jut like your own. This lets you communicate effectively with your students. You also want to get your TEFL certificate, as it includes essential training to become a teacher. Some schools require another certificate called Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), so it helps to learn more about this and where it is required.

Finding a TEFL Job Abroad
There is always a high demand for TEFL certified teachers, because they are so hard to find. Even domestically, you can find a job helping others learn the English language, but there to tends to be more of a demand internationally. Regardless, once you get your certification, you have many options, such as schools, private organizations, or as a private tutor.

With the TEFL certificate, you are opening up many tutoring and teaching opportunities. If your goal is to travel abroad with this newfound skill, you will find that you never run out of job availabilities. Man countries are looking for skilled and trained TEFL teachers to help teach them English.
