While Norfolk schools are preparing for students to come back, TWP, Teens With A Purpose, are preparing to close an exciting summer camp of positive ideas, great trips, and renewed empowerment for the year ahead. This years theme Camp Inspired was designed to utilize skills learned, and show off the individual talent of each camper, taught by a diverse group of young counselors, who used to be TWP teens.
Teens went on fun trips this summer, kayaking at Ocean View, Ocean Breeze Park in Virginia Beach, Whole Foods Market, Virginia Beach, and Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake.
Campers of this last session are all teens in the ninth grade or above.Previous camps involved younger middle school students. TWP strives to teach teens good moral values, to use for now and the rest of life. Matters of today's society are discussed in depth, and each teen has the ability to think of solutions to real social problems.
One of the highlights of the program this summer was the garden, which yielded a plethra of vegetables. Squash, and eggplant, tomatoes, and herbs filled the plot of land with fresh grown food. Campers had the responsibility of caring for the garden, a wonderful experience to have for the future, a lesson in sustainability, and homegrown food.
The subject of cyber bullying was portrayed to the parents. How do you handle cyber bullying, if it happens to you? What is cyber bullying? The use of the internet or other forms of social media. The internet is a powerful force, use it with care. Parents, guardians, and caregivers were given the opportunity to share in the subject. This interaction helped the audience to get a good point of understanding, so parents, and their teens can ward off any incident.
Deirdre Love, the founder and Director of TWP, shared a word about the vision she had about 15 years ago to help teens grow in a positive way. Her mentor-ship has helped a vast number of teens transition from inquisitive young teens, into, productive adults. Each year at the end of the school season, TWP Camp starts, and goes on throughout the summer. Middle School students can apply.
