Teens learn financial literacy in April

April is known as the time taxes are due for most Americans, so it makes sense that it has been designated Financial Literacy Month. To mark the occasion, TP Rewards Publishing, Inc. is launching a financial literacy campaign aimed at teenagers. The non-profit company is unveiling “The Teamesteem is Key to a Teen’s Financial Dream,” or TKTFD.

“The campaign challenges teens to look in the mirror and realize that the keys to their financial future are not going to be handed to them,” said Daryl Mackey, an author in the Washington, DC metropolitan area that has worked with TP Rewards.

“Through the lesson activities, students will complete a process of self-discovery, research and planning,” said Tenickia Polk, CEO of TP Rewards. “By the end of the four lessons, students will be equipped with the basic tools to compile their unique financial path,” Polk said.

The campaign is designed for use by community centers, libraries, churches and other organizations, according to Polk. Four free workshops are scheduled at the Sherwood Hall Library at 2501 Hall Lane in Alexandria, VA on April 4, 11 and 18 from 7 – 8 p.m. Youth between the ages of 12 and 21 can attend.

The April 4 workshop will focus on Financial Goals. The April 11 workshop will address Budgeting and the April 18 class will explain How Teamesteem Can Help You Plan and Pay for College. The last workshop includes the opportunity to apply for a $500 scholarship from WHAM, a local foundation.
