Duval, Clay and St. John's County Schools will be opening on August 23rd.  That is only weeks away and as many kids and parents are preparing for this school year, some teens will be driving to school for the first time.

The Florida Department of Transportation has a list of tips you and your teens should be aware of as schools open:

  • Look all around your vehicle, all the time.  Keep your eyes moving.
  • Pedestrians have the right-of-way in a crosswalk, marked or not, and drivers must stop to allow a pedestrian to cross.
  • Exercise extreme caution in school zones and along the route to school.
  • Look for pedestrians stepping out from between parked cars.
  • Bicycles are harder to see than automobiles.

As drivers approach the school, they find a lot of activity: school buses, students walking or biking, crossing guards helping kids cross the street, cars pulling in along the side of the road, and of course other drivers who are dropping off/picking up kids.

Drivers of all ages need to be alert.  Don't forget to discuss these tips with your teen drivers.  They may be responsible teens, however experience counts and young drivers just naturally don't have the experience of adults.  That doesn't mean they aren't good drivers, but it never hurts to be reminded.

Remember parents, be a good example to your kids.
