Teens and cigarette smoking has been an issue facing teens for many years. Most teens understand that cigarettes are expensive, discolor their teeth, and put them at an increased risk for cancer. And yes, teens still smoke cigarettes, as well as chew tobacco. According to Livestrong.com more teenage girls, 30% to be exact, are smoking cigarettes; in comparison to ten years ago. Many believe it is due to the excessive amount of pressure that is put on our teens today. Through social networking, the pressure to do well in school, or maybe even the desire to be thin.
The drug called nicotine, is what makes cigarette smoking so addictive. Nicotine, along with tar, carbon monoxide, arsenic, and formaldehyde are also in the make of what makes a cigarette so dangerous. If most teens knew what was actually in this highly addictive hobby; would most teens take that first puff? Many teens still would, but some may think twice. Most adults, as well as teens, will say they smoked their first cigarette out of curiosity. Many teens also say that they were always around adults that smoked, and accepted smoking as part of life.
We now know that cigarette smoking is very dangerous, very expensive, and has taken the lives of many. Some teens say that they smoke to feel relaxed and out of boredom. This just reinforces the reasons of why it is so important for our teens to be involved in extra curricular activities. When teens are involved in activities, they do not have time to become bored and possibly take that first smoke.
We all know that teens are watching our every move. By not smoking, exercising regularly and watching what we eat, everyone in the family benefits. Keeping our families healthy is a constant challenge in our country today. With teen obesity on the rise and fast food establishments on every corner, raising teens is a full time job.
Most importantly speak to your teen about the adverse effects smoking has on our bodies. Asthma, breathing problems, and chronic coughing are just some of the day to day consequences that smokers live with. If you are a smoker, maybe this is your wake up call to put out that cigarette and find a healthier you. Set a goal, as a family, to lead a healthier lifestyle and experience all of what life has to offer you. What are you waiting for? Hop off of the couch, put out that lit cigarette, and enjoy life to the fullest.

I've been telling my son, ever since he was about 3, that one of his "rules in life" is never to smoke!
I am a father of a 19 month old and the way society is nowadays, I see 10 year olds smoking. I hope my son won't ever touch a cigarette.
I started smoking when I was 14 and it is one powerful addiction. I hope that my kids will listen when I tell them that the "momentary coolness" will alienate them later on.
Great article and such an important topic its such a bad habit and so hard to stop.
As parents we must be ever alert for all sorts of warning signs, esp. during the teen years. Thanks for the article.
Been very lucky with the teenagers...no one smokes or even thought about doing so.
Great article and message for parents and teens.
