Saturday, a 15-year-old teenager died when an amusement park ride broke and she was thrown from the ride in Barcelona, Spain; two other people were taken to the hospital with severe injuries, and one young boy walked away with minor injuries from the ride after the fall.
A mechanical arm of the “El Pendulo” (The Pendulum) ride broke off and the basket that held the teens fell on top of another ride called The Gold Mine, said Sara Jaurriete, director of the Tibidabo amusement park in Barcelona, Spain.
The El Pendulo ride is described as "the ultimate free fall and the first of its kind in Spain." The website for the amusement park states that the El Pendulo ride has a "long articulated arm where passengers are taken up to 38 meters (124 ft). From here, you are dropped in a free fall reaching 100kph (60 mph) in 2.8 seconds. Once you reach the bottom, the arm takes you through a 50-metre arc."
4,000 people were in the park during the accident. The El Pendulo ride is one of the main attractions at the park and was developed about four years ago.
The victim’s names have not been released and the park will remain closed Sunday while the investigation continues.
