Courtney D. Birt, 18, was being held without bond late Tuesday night in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old Howard High School student.

Chattanooga police spokesman Nathan Hartwig said Birt was charged with criminal homicide shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. He was arrested after police responded to a call about a shooting at 2620 Carr St.

Howard High School was placed on lockdown and students were later sent home after the suspect reportedly was seen fleeing toward the school, police said.

A source said the shooting happened because a woman older than Birt allegedly claimed that the victim had "disrespected," her.

Birt, of 2104 E. 32nd St. is scheduled to appear in Hamilton County Judge Clarence Shattuck's court on March 12 at 8:30 a.m.
