A teenage bicyclist was killed Saturday morning when he was struck from behind by a vehicle in Athens.
But so far, no charges have been filed in the deadly wreck.

The incident happened around 7:20 a.m. on Winterville Road near Hancock Road, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Investigators said Mr. Tobias Antwon Smith, 19, of Evans Street, was traveling west on Winterville Road on a bicycle that had no lights and no reflectors when he was struck from behind by a 2006 Mazda 3.

“The driver suddenly observed the bicyclist and made an attempt to avoid the collision by swerving to the left,” Sgt. Kenneth Watkins said in a news release.

But the driver, Ms. Tanya Nicole Knox, of Spring Valley Road, was not able to avoid hitting the bicyclist.

Mr. Smith was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased, Sgt. Watkins said. Ms. Knox was not injured.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
