Teen shot to death while walking with friend in broad daylight on Atlanta street

A 17-year-old boy was shot to death while he was walking down the street with a friend Monday afternoon in northwest Atlanta.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified him as Mr. Wilton Smith-Muirhead, of Ellenwood.

But police on Tuesday were still trying to find out who shot him and why. It's also unclear if the teen was the target.

The investigation began at 3:34 p.m. when officers responded to 505 James P. Brawley Drive after getting a call about a shooting.

“Upon officer’s arrival, they located an unresponsive male lying on the ground and with a large amount of blood coming from the area of his upper body,” police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.

The teen was transported Grady Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, Officer Jones said. He died later at the hospital, Officer Jones said.

Investigators responded to the area of the shooting near Cameron M. Alexander Boulevard to gather evidence.
