An 18-year-old was shot to death while sitting on a couch inside an apartment in Clayton County. And police are trying to determine who fired the deadly shot, which happened during a celebration.
It's unclear who was the target of the gunfire and it's unclear how many shots were fired in the predawn shooting at the Ashwood Ridge Apartments. It was also unclear what prompted the shooting.
It happened shortly after 12:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 200 block of Upper Riverdale Road in Jonesboro, according to Clayton County police. Officers responded to the complex after getting a report that someone in the parking lot was firing shots from an assault rifle, police spokeswoman JaQuitta Williams said.
Several people had gathered in and around the area for some type of celebration when the someone opened fire, Williams said. During the shooting Devin Jackson was sitting on a couch inside one of the apartments, Williams said. Jackson was shot at least once and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, Williams said. It's unclear if the 18-year-old lived at the complex or was just visiting and police have not said where on the body he was struck by the stray bullet.
“Right now, our investigators are searching for suspects, and potential leads in the case,” Williams said. No detailed description was released of the suspect and it was unclear if the shooter fled the scene on foot or in a vehicle.
