Teen mom controversy, meltdown exposed nationally

Sometimes we need to call a spade a spade - babies having babies typically isn't an easy way to start your future and most parents would agree they don't want to see their teenager being a parent before they even finish school - high school that is.

The controversy that surrounds Teen Mom, an MTV reality series, can range from showing teens how difficult it is to be a parent at a young age, to glamorizing it and creating a celebrity-like life.

As the finale special aired, Dr. Drew hosted an update of the four teen moms they have followed since they were 16 and pregnant.  The discussion varies from losing their normal lives of going to school, attending parties and as the babies become toddlers, it is not getting any easier.  As Dr. Drew noted, it actually becomes more complicated.

If you are a regular viewer of Teen Mom, you will know of the dispute and accusations of one of the couples (Amber Portwood and her ex-boyfriend, Gary) violent relationship that pours over into raising their daughter.  Amber Portwood is now in the headlines, and even for a teenager, it is not a headline you would want for yourself.

Is this yet another example that these are simply teens trying to be adults, yet lack the maturity, patience of raising a child, pressures of being a provider, and the life experience that many parents need to raise healthy and stable children?

What is entertainment and what is bad behavior?  Child Protective Services is now involved.

Teenage pregnancy is a growing concern.  Do programs like Teen Mom or 16 and Pregnant actually help teens understand the stress and hardships of being a teenage mother or does it make it plausible to teens?  Sure, it may be hard, but they do it.... yes they have some regrets, but look at that cute little baby that will love me?

Having a baby is not easy - even for adults.

It is a shame adoption isn't brought more often into the show.  It is a viable option, although difficult,  it is a priceless gift of love to your child. Adoption today has so many options and pregnant teens need to learn more about it.  The blessing to both the baby and the adopting family is priceless.

In St. Augustine, St. Gerard Campus is for young mother's in crisis.  Do you know a teen that recently found out she was pregnant?  Is she unsure of what to do?  St. Gerard's offers free services and counseling.  Teen Time in Florida is also available through Planned Parenthood.
