Teen Mom 2 star Leah Messer has been a rock when it came to her daughter Ali, 4. Messer has had to deal with her daughter’s health issues and on last night’s season finale the family received the results from the genetic tests. Little Ali was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy.
The entire family traveled from their home in West Virginia to see neuromuscular specialist Dr. Tsao in Ohio. Along for the trip was Messer, 21, her husband Jeremy Calvert, her mother Dawn, ex-husband Corey Simms and his new wife Miranda. Ali has suffered from developmental issues since her birth and the family was desperate for answers.
During the meeting with the doctor, Dr. Tsao revealed, “We do know she has muscular dystrophy.” Dr. Tsao also added that Ali has a specific Titan gene mutation. He added, “Doctors throughout the world are just starting to learn about this mutation, which can affect the heart and breathing. Throughout the whole world, there are less than twenty cases.”
Later that evening, Messer, Calvert, Simms and his new wife met for dinner to discuss the diagnoses. At dinner, Messer said, “We don’t know what to expect, since it’s so rare. We have to take it as it comes. We’ve been strong this far. We still have to have hope.”
In the months since the filming, Ali uses a wheelchair routinely however Messer said that she is still optimistic about her daughter’s future. Speaking with Life & Style magazine, Messer said, “Ali is running. She’s doing so much better than expected.”
“We don’t know what the future holds, but this is proof that we should never give up hope.” A source close to the situation said, “She [Leah] is remaining so strong throughout all of this. Her daughter’s health is and always has been her top priority.”
Leah Messer is also mother to Ali’s twin sister, Aleeah and her daughter with Calvert, Adalyn, 1.
The Teen Mom 2 season reunion airs on Tuesday at 11 p.m. on MTV.
