According to court records, 19-year-old Matthew Durham confessed to raping several young girls, forcing some boys to perform oral sex on him and even making other kids watch.
Missionaries are no stranger to the area and often volunteer at orphanages around the country and these teens are given an amazing amount of unsupervised access to these children.
Durham had requested to stay with the children in what is called an overflow bunk instead of staying at an offsite location, which is the usual practice.
"The victims are believed to be both boys and girls between the ages of four and nine, at least one of whom is HIV positive."
Prosecutors have stated that even though the alleged sex crimes were committed overseas, Durham can be held accountable for the crimes in Oklahoma.
Durham is currently being held without bond.
Durham’s lawyer, Steven Jones says the chargers are false and defended his client in some form of racist tirade:
"The events that occurred in Kenya the last maybe five six days that Matt was there frankly reveal some sort of pseudo-tribal psychological voodoo practiced on him, including confiscating his passport, false imprisonment, keeping food from him one day, delay in allowing him to depart from the country, misleading his parents. I don't think Hollywood could make up what happened at this so-called orphanage.” [Emphasis added]
Dismissing the charges as voodoo is degrading to those children affected by these allegations if they turn out to be true. Jones comments are highly insensitive to the victims and it is alarming Durham would allow such comments to be made on his behalf seeing as how he was sent to Kenya to help these disenfranchised children.
