An 18-year-old was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday for choking, beating and kicking an elderly woman while she was on the floor in a home invasion in DeKalb County last year.

Quintae Collins will have to serve 15 of those 20 years behind bars before he can be released, according to the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office. He pleaded guilty to robbery, aggravated assault, theft by taking and abuse of an elder person, but not to a fifth charge of criminal attempt to commit aggravated sodomy, spokesman Erik Burton said.

The incident happened on Sept. 17 when Collins knocked on the victim’s door at her Lithonia home and asked to borrow detergent for his grandmother, Burton said. When the 78-year-old woman opened the door he choked her and knocked her to the floor, then he hit her and kicked her several times in the chest, the spokesman said.

Collins also pressed a cloth over her face so she could not breathe, according to the indictment. Investigators said Collins allegedly demanded that the woman performed a sex act on him.

He stole a check from the woman’s checkbook as well as her Chevy Lumina, Burton said. He was later apprehended by DeKalb County police officers who found the stolen check in his pocket, officials said.

“[Collins] will have more than a decade behind bars to think about this brutal and senseless attack on an innocent senior citizen,” District Attorney Robert James said.
