Teen fired for wearing Broncos jersey to Seattle area job?

Was a teen fired for wearing a Broncos jersey to work this past weekend? A Seattle area teen claims that he got fired for wearing a Broncos jersey on Sunday (Jan. 19). This was reportedly during a day he says his employer told workers to sport jerseys in support of their team. According to a report from Wednesday (Jan. 22), 17-year-old Nathaniel Wentz says that he went to work in his Broncos attire and was told to go home and change. He went home to change but didn't return to work and found out the next day that he had been fired.

Washington Minimum Wage Increased

A lot of debating is taking place on the internet as football fans argue about what actually took place here. No news agencies have received a quote from the employer himself yet, so most of the information is just coming from a teenager and his father. The argument taking place between internet commenters in nearly every form of social media is that he was either fired unfairly or that he should have returned to work in the requested attire of his employer.

As the state of Washington is an "employment at will" state, the teen could get fired for just wearing a Broncos jersey to work. It also means that if an employee simply does not show up, which appears to also be the case in this instance, the employer is within their rights to terminate without prejudice. The story is receiving a lot of publicity, though, because the Seattle Seahawks play the Denver Broncos in the 2014 Super Bowl. If the employer did believe that an employee wearing a Broncos jersey near Seattle would be bad for business, he was legally allowed to request his employee go home to change.

The business in question is reportedly the Odyssey 1 family entertainment center in Tacoma, Washington.
