Gilbert-- Tuesday, students at a Valley high school were given the opportunity to discover the dangers of distracted driving. Students used hands-on modules to discover what it's like to drive while distracted, such as driving while texting or under the influence of an illegal substance.
Dangers of Distracted Driving
Students were given this opportunity to try to detour the students from driving distracted, as more than 1,200 people are injured each day due to distracted drivers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's estimated by the CDC, that the risk for an accident occurring with a student behind the wheel increases because teen drivers are four times are likely to have an accident than older drivers. It's hoped, after using this hands-on module, teen drivers will practice safer driving habits.
During this module, teens learned that distracted driving involves:
- Visual distractions, such as taking your eyes off of the road for any reason
- Manual distractions, which involves taking your hands off of the wheel
- Cognitive distractions, like talking on a cell phone or texting
