Teen critical after being hit by hit-and-run driver while she was on sidewalk

A 19-year-old woman is in critical condition after a vehicle struck her from behind while she was walking on the sidewalk in Athens.

Hours later, police were still looking for the hit-and-run driver.

The incident happened at 3:05 a.m. while the woman was walking eastbound on Oak Street between Carr and Oconee streets, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

“She was walking in the grass, off the roadway,” police Lt. Keith Morris said. “A vehicle traveling eastbound on Oak Street left the roadway and struck the female from behind.”

The vehicle fled the scene after the incident.

Witnesses at the scene provided a description of the vehicle, and police located the vehicle a short time later, but the driver was already gone.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was transported by EMS to Athens Regional Medical Center for the treatment of life-threatening injuries.

Police have not said if they were able to trace the car to its owner.
