On Thursday, police in Newport News arrested Khaleed McKoy-Ward, 18, who reportedly robbed a man confined to a wheelchair, earlier this year.
On February 1, 62-year-old Kenneth Jones Sr. cashed his winning "Pick 3" lottery ticket, worth $500 at Mo’s Convenience Store off Warwick Blvd., and promptly gave $50 each to the two clerks, and another $5 to a customer.
Store surveillance video caught McKoy-Ward watching Jones as he generously shared his good fortune.
The diminutive McKoy-Ward (who is listed as 4'10" and 100 lbs.) can also be seen leaving the store ahead of Jones. He then waited behind the building and followed his victim home, according to police.
Jones told WAVY:
"When I turned in the driveway, he came running behind me, and said, 'Hey! Give me my $5, give me my $5,'" said Jones. "I said, 'Man, I ain't got your $5. These are my $5.'"
The suspect then ran his hands through the victim's jacket until he found the remaining cash, and fled on foot, according to Jones.
A week after the robbery, a CrimeLine tip helped identify McKoy-Ward as the suspect.
McKoy-Ward has been charged with robbery and contempt of court.
